Moira had already been in Coulson County for six months before she got her first letter from Elsa. That wasn’t unusual, as the mail was slow, and Moira knew that Elsa was busy with her students. Elsa told her that Tom and she were developing a close friendship. She knew Elsa well enough to know what the letter meant. It was a Wednesday afternoon, school was over for the day, and she sat on the porch with the letter in her lap.

“Bad news?”

She looked up to see Millie with two cups of coffee in her hands. She offered one to Moira. “Kind of,” she said, as she took the cup from Millie. “Kind of the worst news ever.”

Millie sat next to her.

Moira continued, “My best friend in the world, Elsa, has just told me that she and Tom are becoming friendly. My Tom, well, he was my Tom.”

“Jah, I remember you telling me of Tom. What are you going to do about it?”

Moira took a sip of the hot coffee. “I don’t see what I can do. I made a choice when I left. I’m surprised that Elsa is thinking of marriage because she used to think the same as me.”

“This letter is telling you that they’re getting serious toward each other?”

Moira nodded. “I’ve always been in love with Tom Miller, but I left him to come here.”

“Did he know you were in love with him?”

Moira shrugged. “I think so. He asked me to marry him shortly before I left. I said ‘no,’ and then I made him promise not to write to me.”

“Well, then, he wouldn’t know, would he?” Millie tilted her head to the side and she frowned at Moira.

They sat in silence for a time. Moira looked at Millie. “It seems that I’m never satisfied. Now that I’m here, I wish I was there, and I’m sure if I go back there, I’d regret leaving.” Even though Moira saw the doctor every couple of weeks for dinner and some other kind of outing, her heart still belonged to Tom.

“Sometimes life’s like that. We want what we don’t have and when we get it, we don’t value it and we want something else.”

“So, what you’re saying is to be thankful for what we have right now?”

Millie giggled. “Don’t take my advice about anything. As I see it, you have two options at this point. You stay here, or you go back and see if you can win Tom, if that’s what you want.”

“Now, winning Tom means winning him away from Elsa, and I’m not sure that I’d want to do that.” Moira realized now that Millie had been in a similar position when she let her friend have the man she loved. Moira had thought Millie shouldn’t have let the man go, but here she was, about to do a similar thing. Moira remained silent, but was sure that Millie was having the same thought.

“I never thought I’d get a letter like that. Well, I hoped I wouldn’t get a letter like that.
